The draw of lots of 15,000 lucky winners, who used digital mode for payment, was conducted by paralympic Deepa Malik, cricketer Gautam Gambhir, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley by the click of a button.
The first lot of lottery of Modi government's twin schemes -- Lucky Grahak Yojana for consumers and Digi-Dhan Vyapar Yojana for merchants -- was launched on Sunday at the Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
The draw of lots of 15,000 lucky winners, who used digital mode for payment, was conducted by paralympic Deepa Malik, cricketer Gautam Gambhir, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasadand Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley by the click of a button.
While Gambhir made a payment of Rs 13,258 to pay off his electricity bills in front of a packed audience, Deepa Malik said digitalisation was Santa Claus' gift to India.
A secure and encrypted system generated by the government has been used to randomly select bank account numbers. The winners will be informed by the bank within 24 hours.
The schemes are aimed at encouraging people to move towards a significantly higher usage of digital transactions by offering incentives.
PRIZES UNDER DIGI DHAN VYAPAR YOJANA
Merchants and traders accepting payments through digital modes will have a chance to win Rs 50,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 2,500 weekly. Under the Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana, a total of 10 merchants and traders will be selected as winners through lucky draw of transaction IDs.
Mega prizes under Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana will be announced on 14th April next year. The first prize would be worth Rs 50 lakh, the second prize worth Rs 25 lakh and the third worth Rs 12 lakh.
Winners will be selected on a daily basis under the Lucky Grahak Yojana and weekly basis under the Digi-Dhana Vyapar Yojana, leading up to 14th April 2017, when the schemes will culminate in a mega draw.
The draws for these events will be taken out in 100 different cities around the country, in a ceremony accompanied by a digital payment adoption fair called DigiDhan Mela. As part of the mela, to encourage adoption of digital payments by local residents, booths and help centers will be set up by banks and other stakeholders, where citizens can get apps downloaded and learn how to do digital transactions.
But will the lottery scheme be lucky for the government facing flak from opposition is something only time will tell.
- 1Purpose of these schemes is to encourage people to oftener transact by digital modes.
- 2A lucky draw of a similar kind was held in Korea to motivate people to go digital.
- 3Under Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana, 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes are Rs 50 lakh, Rs 25 lakh and Rs 12 lakh respectively
